Post bariatric surgery hair loss tips
Hair loss after bariatric surgery is a common occurrence, particularly in patients who are mature aged, for a multitude of reasons that can be unique to the individual, or as a general result of the rapid weight loss that follows surgery. Here are some tips to help minimise post-op hair loss from our dietitians:
- Protein Intake: Ensure you’re consuming enough protein, as inadequate protein intake can contribute to hair loss. Aim for 60-90 grams of protein per day, or as advised by your healthcare provider.
- Check for nutritional deficiencies: Once a year is a great time to see your General Practitioner to complete a health assessment and have your nutritional levels checked, in particular zinc, iron and B12 for hair loss.
- Vitamins and Minerals: If you have been advised to take a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement, ensure you are consistent, especially for those who have had weight loss surgery.
- Hydration: Stay well-hydrated, as dehydration can contribute to hair loss.
- Follow-Up Care: Attend all follow-up appointments with your healthcare team, as they can monitor your nutrient levels and make recommendations based on your individual needs.
- Stress Management: Practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises, as stress can contribute to hair loss.
- Healthy Diet: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to support overall health and hair growth.
It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider or dietitian for personalised advice tailored to your specific needs and health status.
